Style Crush: Zooey Deschanel

Who doesn't love Zooey Deschanel? Those eyes, her style, that voice! I just recently watched '500 Days of Summer' again and her character of Summer is just the cutest thing ever! Here's some Zooey inspiration....

She is also one half of the amazing duo 'She & Him', along with uber-talented M. Ward.

And lest we not forget that she also happens to have great taste in men. Being that she's married to Ben Gibbard, I think we can expect perhaps the most musically inclined offspring, maybe ever?

Are you ready for some cat-eye eyeliner and 60's bangs yet? I know I am ;)

Tuesday Thrifting = Score!

Yesterday I took my mom out on her very first thrifting adventure and discovered she may just be my new lucky charm! Check out these two amazing danish modern chairs I scored yesterday while out and about!

Both of these lovelies came home with me to the tune of only $79! (Yes for both!)

The actual chair frames are in mint condition and are possibly teak? I am not sure, but regardless they are beautiful! The cushions are the only thing that needs some attention... it seems that these burnt orange ones that came with the chair are possibly old couch cushions? But that is an easy (and fun!) fix! I have an Orla Kiely tablecloth (from Target) that I have been saving for just such a project, so I am anxious to see if it will be enough for both chairs...

John and I have been looking for what seems like forever for chairs like these, and it seemed either we would find ones that just weren't quite right, or we would find a pair that we adored but they cost half our monthly mortgage, so when my mom spotted these (and on her maiden voyage and everything, go mom!) I about lost my mind! I just love vintage scores! :)

Another tiny purchase I made were these sweet little patches. When I originally picked them up I thought maybe they were Girl Scout badges (hello RVA summer camp!) but I think they are actually travel souvenirs. Either way, I thought these three were definitely worth $2. I'm not sure what they'll be used for yet, but I am sure I'll find something fun!

Our day got cut slightly short because I had to go back to work, but it was such an awesome afternoon! What amazing thrift store finds have you happened upon lately?

Hope you are all having an amazing Wednesday! Here the weather is absolutely beautiful! I've got all the windows open and the breezes are flowing, which is just making me love my house right now! Hello Spring!!!

I'm off to work on Indie Biz projects, and later dinner with friends at our favorite Mexican joint... can you say guacamole and 'ritas ;)

Artwork For Bathroom

So we are working on our whole house bit by bit, and I am looking for a great print to add to my main bathroom.

We have a 1950's home, so of course my bathroom has that retro tile in gray and pink! (Did they not make bathtubs that weren't pink in that decade?!) Even though in a way I love that gray and pink tile, since pretty much everything from that decade makes me swoon, one day it will all need to come down for both aesthetics and structural reasons, but until there are few extra Benjamins laying around we are making due with what we have. I have been browsing Etsy for some art to jazz it up a bit in there and here are some of the lovelies I came across...

Love Will Save the Day - Grey Art Poster Print
So cute and perfect color combo! Click here!

Wash Your Hands Owl 11x14
Ahh! I love this and soo perfect for the bathroom ;)

Birds in Blues
The color, the birds, oh my I'm in love!

I Heart Nerds Print
This is maybe not exactly what I want for the bathroom, but I just Love it :)

I will definitely update with my final choice, and maybe post some pics of the bathroom's groovy tile ;)

Ladies Movie Night!!
So about every month or so the ladies in my family get together for a chick flick, some good food, and few laughs. It's always so much fun, and tonight I played host! Everyone brings something, and tonight's menu did not disappoint! We had a chicken salad, a summer sweets salad with greens straight from my friends local farm with some strawberries, blueberries and delicious sharp white cheddar. Can you say yum! Also we had some veggie dip that was so amazing and stuffed mushrooms! Dessert was gluten-free cupcakes (I can't do gluten.) and chocolate covered strawberries! So good, and just so much fun to get all the girls together (although some of were missing due to a stomach bug making the rounds...Danielle we missed you!) I also LOVE this movie, from the scenery, to the great soundtrack, and who doesn't just love the adorable Ms. Deschanel!

But what really makes hosting so great is that it completely lit a fire under my butt to tackle some of the things around my house that needed tending to, like this closet door that had been driving me nuts for the past few weeks...

When we repainted our living room this closet door had been left in it's original wood state, sticking out like a sore thumb! So yesterday and today I got to it, and primed and painted this baby, so now it looks like this....

So much better!

And I am in love with this door knob! I bought this probably 3 years ago at Anthropologie, and have carted it all over with me from place to place, never finding quite the right spot for it... til now!!

Isn't it amazing how much we can get done when we know company is coming ;)

I hope that you all had a great Saturday night too!

Sick as a Dog...

So this poor little puppy's face pretty much sums up how I feel right now! I have a rip roaring head cold (so sorry for the week long dry spell here at A Bird Out of Water!) My "vacation" was somewhat derailed by a painting/wall emergency in our main bathroom (more on that little doozie coming soon..) so instead of 5 days of sunshine, I spent four days kicking my bathroom's butt and 1 day recovering, but hey such is life right?
However that means I am seriously behind on my Indie Biz projects, and then you add in Continuing Ed Credits I had to complete this week for my day job, and since yesterday my new little friend "Harry the Headcold" (That's right, I gave it name.) decided to make an unannounced visit, to say I am "behind", well that would be putting it mildly!

Luckily I have the next few days off to rest up and kick ol' Harry to the curb! I hope to get a few posts up and catch up on Indie Biz projects! I hope you all are doing well!

ps. For some reason when I purchased my new domain, all my previous comments disappeared :(
If you had left a comment and it is now lost in cyber space, please accept my apologies!

Hello Vacation

So starting today I have the next 5 days off from work....can I get a "woo-hoo" please! Don't get me wrong, I love my job. (I teach pilates full-time, which lemme tell ya, is a pretty good gig!) But we all need a breather now and then, so I plan on using mine to spend time with my hubster, knock out a few Indie Biz lessons and soak up some of this sunshine we are finally getting here in FL!

My mom had mentioned seeing a video of girl "dancing with strangers" a few days ago, and then today I found it on the super fun site Polka Dot Robot! The awesome girl dancing is Katie Sokoler from Color Me Katie. The fun music and jolliness of the dancing pretty much sum up how I feel today!
Check this out, it will make you smile :)

I hope everyone has an amazing sunny day :)

Work in Progress

Intended for a Valentine's Day gift, I am still in the process of making this little diddy for my hubby...

It's a boardbag!!! (In case that means nothing to you, it is a bag made to carry surfboards to prevent damage and wax melting everywhere!) I started out by creating two separate panels, each with a maroon, a pea green (my fav color) and a brown section made of heavy-duty cotton duck. Then on the green panel I added a felt tree, first attaching with a iron on adhesive called HeatnBond. Then I went back and hand embroidered the outside edge of the tree with embroidery floss and added a few buttons.

Later this week I hope to get a chance to join the two panels, making the bag, and then I will add a drawstring to the bottom to finish!

I just LOVE trees, don't you?!?

AHH! So many exciting things, between Indie Biz class, projects, blogging! So much Fun!

Keep your eyes peeled for my first DIY coming soon!

Thanks for stopping by :)

Craft Swap Goodies

So last month I participated in my first Craft Swap that was put on by Katie from Skunkboy Creatures. It was such an awesome experience! I got paired up with Kasia from Poland, which was so cool to get to meet a someone from across the globe! We swapped stories and details from our homelands and asked for some guidelines (fav colors, mediums etc.) and then made goodies for each other! And then the waiting began (Poland is pretty far away!)....

One afternoon about a week and half later my mail lady rang my bell with a package! "Is this from Poland???" I squealed.... It was! Yea, SO much fun to get surprises in the mail! Check out what the SUPER talented Kasia sent my way....

In addition to this adorable felt snail pouch (that my iPhone just happens to fit perfectly in!) she also made me a beautiful bracelet made of small felt balls and a mini journal made from a post-it pack! So clever! She and a friend have an awesome blog called The Craft Royalists, which is all in Polish, but they are both super cute and their site is loaded up with great pictures. Thanks again Kasia, I LOVE my stuff, and get compliments on my phone case all the time!!

Below is her swap item, a hat I crocheted and added some goodies too!

Look how cute Kasia is in her hat! Thanks again Kasia, it was so much fun!

I seriously recommend doing a swap, it was great motivation, and was SO much fun to feel like I had a pen pal from a far away land :)

I am off to meet a friend at the "cheapie" theater as we like to call it (it's a second run theater, all shows $3, can't beat that!) to see It's Complicated.... Hope its funny!

Have a great night :)

Don't You Mean "A Fish Out of Water"....

Nope, I mean it when I call myself a
bird out of water. Allow me to introduce myself....

Hello, my name is Ashley. I fill my days with making things, surfing with my husband, and spending entirely too much time reading blogs! Having just recently finished with Miss Elsie*Cakes Style School, I felt inspired to create a blog of my own, and maybe even an Etsy shop to pass along some of my goodies.... but what to call this new project??...

A little back story...
One claim to fame of mine is that I am an absolute murderer of cliches. This "skill" is completely unintentional. Things like, "that was the last straw that broke the camel's back" and "you can kill a bush with two birds" come out of my mouth constantly, with little to no effort on my part. Is there a name for this condition, possibly cliche' dyslexia??

So anyways, one evening not too long ago, I'm riding in the car with my hubby, talking about the fact that I still feel like I am muddling through a quarter-life crisis (you mean 26 doesn't bring immediate clarity?), and wondering what the heck to do with myself, when I blurt out that I feel like "a bird out of water!"...

At first, realizing my mistake, I was frustrated by yet another silly thing that had come out of my mouth unintentionally. But then it hit me....

Photo 10

It was perfect! That phrase sums up most of my days! I feel like a girl trying to learn how to use her sea legs on land...

so maybe I am just a bird out of water :)
