The Savvy Crafter Challenge!!!

savvy crafter
Who else out there has more supplies than they could ever possibly need, and yet still makes weekly or bi-weekly (or thrice-weekly, if we're really coming clean here) trips to the craft store?  Anybody else walk into their craft room, studio or sewing nook, and get so overwhelmed by the abundance of possible projects and stuff, that they simply turn off the light and walk away?  Or could anyone else possibly use a bit of extra cash for the holidays?!

If you fall into any (or all!) of the above categories, then why not join me for The Savvy Crafter Challenge, the first of it's kind here at A Bird Out of Water.

This started as an idea I had a few weeks ago, originally just for myself.  Frustrated that I had not actually made anything in several weeks, I went to the local craft superstore to "get inspired".  However, upon arriving, I had a bit of an epiphany.  Perhaps the reason that I had not made much lately was that I already had way too much stuff, way too many supplies.  Walking into my craft room lately feels like system overload. I see all the potential projects that I have already purchased supplies for, and either have started and not finished, or in some cases (ok, a lot of cases) not even attempted at all!  That's when it hit me, I didn't need more stuff to get inspired, I just needed to make time to work on the things that I already have going on!
So I decided I needed a little Craft Store Sabatical, a crafting supplies detox if you will...
And this brings us to our CHALLENGE! Join me for the ENTIRE MONTH OF OCTOBER in The Savvy Crafter Challenge by refraining from buying any craft supplies!

So what do you say, are you up for it? If so here are the rules....

The Savvy Crafter Challenge
1. NO purchasing craft supplies in any form, from any retailer, craft store or otherwise, for the entire month of October! (yes, that includes Target...)
2. Commit to making awesome projects, using only the loot you already have.
3. Make a personal goal (because only you know how much time you truly have to devote to crafting!) for a number of projects to make throughout the month. More on this later...
4. At the end of the month, assess your stockpile of supplies, and possibly purge if you feel you have too much. (Or just stop and say a little thank you for all the awesomeness you already possess in your very own craft room!)
5. Last, but not least, share you experience! Leave a comment if you plan on joining, and if you have a blog, post about it! I would love it if you guys would email me with pictures of your Savvy projects, and some may even be featured on the site! Feel free to use the one of the banners, just please include a link back to A Bird Out of Water!

**Now what is totally allowed, and encouraged, is any sharing, swapping, and all forms of general raids on your mother/sister/best friend/obscure neighbor's craft room!** ;)
Now I know, I know, I can hear you already, "but it's October, it's Halloween, how can I not buy for Halloween?"  But that's a big part of what makes it fun, having to think outside of the box (as in big box store!) to come up with Halloween/Fall decor!  Plus, I would bet money that all of us crafty people have some Halloween supplies lurking somewhere if we dig a little!

As for #3 for myself, I am choosing to make 4 projects throughout the month as my goal.  I feel this is a doable number, roughly one a week, and if I blow past my goal and wind up making 20, then that's awesome, but this is not about putting pressure on ourselves! I am hoping, at least for myself, to use this to jump start my creative juices and use some of the super cool supplies I have been sitting on the last few months! Plus, the Holidays (dun, dun, dun) will be here before we know it, and I know I'll feel a little extra weight in my pocketbook by the end of the month by staying out of the craft store! I hope you'll join me in The Savvy Crafter Challenge, but even if it winds up only being me, I am still SUPER excited!
Creative juices, it's GO time!

Good Luck and Thanks for reading!

Pretty Much My New Favorite Song

What do you get when you mix one part Vampire Weekend + one part Best Coast, and then sprinkle in a little Kid Cudi? Awesome, that's what you get.

This song has been on repeat in our house all week! It's all for a special collaboration project for Converse sneakers.  Click here to download your free copy!

Cosmic Forces at Work While Thrifting

A few weeks ago, on a random thrift store stop, I came across this little jem, and for only for a buck to boot! It was love at first sight...
So imagine my surprise, when just a few days later, while at my folks house, I notice this picture of my mom from back in the day... check out those curtains!!!! How cool is that! I think it was meant to be. And isn't my mom just the cutest thing ever!

For now, I am using my new favorite thrift store find as a place to hold my latest crochet projects.
Yep, I'm kinda in love with it! ;)

Renegade Revelations...

Last weekend I checked two things off my list when I traveled *solo* to visit the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago.  It was an amazing weekend, albeit maybe a bit too short, that was filled with enlightening revelations! For instance...

 I love Chicago...

 and I seriously LOVED Renegade!

I got to meet Elsie and Katie, both of whom were lovely!

and I got to meet an Indie Biz friend, Aubrey, from A Daily Obsession. And a big congrats to her and her hubby, they found out the day after Renegade that they are having a boy!

Not only do I love cupcakes,
This mini one from the Milk & Honey Cafe was to die for!
but I also seriously fancy a macaroon!
I can totally travel solo.  In fact, I kinda loved it...

I rode the ferris wheel by myself..

and even braved SkyDeck alone! (those are my feet, 103 stories off the ground!)

but 3 months of solo travel may be a bit too much.
You see, this trip was practice, a trial run of sorts, for my potential 3 month mini round-the-world adventure that I had been dreaming of/planning.  It was actually my parents that first suggested I needed to take some type of small solo trip first, perhaps within the states, and the Renegade Fair seemed the perfect short trip to cut my teeth on.

I loved every minute of my Chicago trip, but boy were my folks right on the money!  Even in just the short span of my weekend trip, I learned a few things about myself, and definitely felt my horizons being broadened! From riding the ferris wheel alone, to going up the 103 floors of the Willis (Sears) Tower and walking out onto one of the glass decks looking directly below, I could sense my courage increasing.  This is why I think solo travel is so important, at least for me, to grow that ever elusive sense of self that so many of us seem to be searching for.  I could move at my own pace, and just simply find my own pace for that matter.

But by the end of Saturday night, I missed my husband, and while I feel it is super important and healthy for me and JB to always be strong individuals, I fear that 3 months apart would be too much, for many reasons! This small trip has given me the confidence boost that I needed, showing me that I could travel as long as I wanted solo, and really enjoy myself, but it left me wondering if 3 months alone is really what I need/want. And perhaps just simply having the knowledge that I could do it is what I have been truly seeking.  I still will see the world, but just maybe in smaller bouts.  Time will tell.. :)

Yesterday was the Goon Squad's one year anniversary party!
It was a pretty rad time, filled with live music, cold beer and good friends.
Even a few stray costumes..
and for the day's main event, a tarp surfing contest!

Happy Anniversary boys!

Chicago In 5 Days!!!

I leave for Chicago in just 5 short days! In some ways I feel like they are going to fly right by and I won't have enough time to get everything done that I want to, but on the other hand, THEY CAN"T GO FAST ENOUGH!!!! ;)
(can you tell I'm just a little bit excited?)

Here are a few things I am planning on doing whilst in The Windy City...

Of course I'll be hitting up Renegade Craft Fair...
Check out here for the details of the weekend's festivities!

I can't wait to see all the vendors but I'm especially looking forward to meeting this girl here...

And one her besties, this adorable gal here...
DIY Collar

You can't visit Chicago without sampling a slice.
I'll definitely be getting myself a cupcake. Daily. And thanks to the lovely suggestions from Caiti over at Life is a Canvas, I'll be heading here, here, and here.

I want to do a bit of shopping outside of the show, perhaps scour some good vintage stores like this one...

And in addition to crafting, some good food, and a little shopping (but, really, what else do you need on vacation) I am going to try to pack in some of the city's sites...

Glass Plant Studio made the suggestion to try a boat tour, which I think is a great idea, especially since I only have 3 days.
It sure is going to be jam-packed, but I can't wait! YEA!

Hope everyone's having a great, sun filled Labor Day Weekend! I'm heading out to enjoy it myself.
